How to clock in and out on the shared tablet

What an employee does at the tablet: a PIN, then one of three buttons.

3 min read

This is the whole job from the employee's side, and it is short enough to teach standing up. There is no account to sign into and nothing to remember except a PIN.

  1. 1

    Type your PIN

The clock shows a number pad. Enter your 4- or 6-digit PIN — the same one you use to switch users at the register. There is a physical keyboard shortcut too if the tablet has one: the number keys, Backspace, and Escape to clear.

  2. 2

    Check that it is you

As soon as the PIN is complete the clock greets you by name and tells you where you stand — on shift since a time, or no open shift. If the name is not yours, you typed someone else's PIN: clear it and start again.

  3. 3

    Choose what to punch

The three buttons turn on only once the PIN is complete, and the clock never chooses for you:

    • Clock in — start your shift.
    • Break — lunch or a short pause. The same button ends the break when you come back.
    • Clock out — end your shift.
  4. 4

    Notice what you cannot press

The button for the state you are already in is off. If you are on shift, Clock in is unavailable and the clock says you already clocked in at a time. That is deliberate — it is what stops someone pressing Clock out when they meant Break.

  5. 5

    Wait for the confirmation

The clock records the punch and says which one it was: clock-in recorded, break started, break ended, clock-out recorded — with your name. Then it clears itself for the next person. If it says to check your shift or clock in first, your PIN worked and the punch did not make sense; read the message.

Pro tips

  • One tablet, no queue: the screen resets the moment your punch is confirmed, so the next person can start typing.
  • Your PIN identifies you the same way it does at the register. Do not hand it to a colleague to punch for you — the punch will carry your name and the tablet's, and both are on the record.
