How to create a tax profile

Add a percentage or fixed-amount tax rate and apply it to specific categories or products.

3 min læst

Tax profiles let you charge different tax rates on different items — typical examples are reduced rates for food, tax-exempt categories, or separate state/city/local rates. Each profile can be applied to categories or specific products.

  1. 1

    Open Tax Profiles

From the sidebar, click Settings → Store settings. Scroll to the Tax Profiles section and click Manage Tax Profiles — this opens the dedicated Tax Profiles page.

  2. 2

    Click + New Tax Profile

The Create Tax Profile modal opens.

  3. 3

    Name and configure the tax

    Fill in:

    • Profile Name — required (e.g. "NY Sales Tax", "Food — reduced rate"), max 100 characters
    • Tax type — toggle between "%" (percentage) and "Fixed" (currency amount)
    • Tax Value — the rate (e.g. 8.875 for 8.875%) or fixed amount (e.g. 2.00)
  4. 4

    Apply the profile (optional)

In the Quick Apply section pick which Categories and/or Manual Products this profile should automatically apply to. Both are multi-select with search.

  5. 5

    Save

Click Create Tax Profile. You return to the Tax Profiles list, which shows Profile Name, Type, the number of Categories, and the number of Products covered.

  6. 6

Use the profile when adding products

On the Add/Edit Product page, tick Charge Tax on Product and pick the new profile from the Tax Profile dropdown. Newly added products in the linked categories automatically inherit the profile.
