How to sell an international recharge

Top up a phone line abroad from the counter, and know what the customer is paying for.

A recharge is a small, fast sale with a customer standing in front of you who cannot check whether it worked. That makes getting the number right the whole job.

  1. 1

    Open International Recharges

From Bill Payment, open International Recharges. U.S. recharges are listed separately from other destinations, because the carriers and the amounts differ.

  2. 2

    Enter the number to recharge

Type the number the customer gives you and read it back to them before you continue. A recharge sent to a wrong number is money that has genuinely gone — there is no cancelling it once the carrier accepts it.

  3. 3

Pick the carrier and the amount

Choose the destination carrier and the recharge amount from what is available. The amounts are set by the carrier, not by you, which is why you cannot always sell a round number.

  4. 4

    Check the wallet has funds

Recharges are paid from your bill-payment wallet. If the balance is short the sale cannot go through, so keep an eye on it before a busy afternoon rather than during one.

  5. 5

    Complete the sale

Take the customer's money and complete it. The recharged line is recorded on the transaction, which is what lets you answer a question about it tomorrow.

  6. 6

    Give the customer the receipt

Hand over or send the receipt with the number on it. When a customer comes back saying it never arrived, the receipt showing the number you sent to is the entire conversation.

Proffs tips

  • Read the number back, digit by digit. Every experienced counter has learned this the expensive way.
  • A recharge that the carrier accepted can take a few minutes to show on the customer's phone. Say so before they ask, so a normal delay does not become an argument.
