There are two ways to do commissions. Setting percentages on an individual user is quick and fine for one salesperson. A plan is the tool when the same rules should apply to several people, or when the rules are more than one number.
- 1
Decide which tool you need
If you have one person on commission and one percentage, the per-user settings are simpler and there is no reason to come here. Use a plan when the same rules should cover a team, or when the rules differ by what was sold.
- 2
Open the commission plan wizard
From the team hub, start a new commission plan. The wizard walks the decisions in order rather than showing you every field at once.
- 3
Set the rules by product type
Commission is calculated per product type — physical goods, repairs, services, serialized items — because those carry very different margins. A flat percentage across all of them usually overpays on the low-margin ones.
- 4
Decide what happens on a refund
This is the decision people forget and then argue about. Commission on a sale that came back is commission you paid on revenue you no longer have. Settle it in the plan, and remember there is an option to deduct from the next payout even when the commission was already paid.
- 5
Assign the plan
Apply the plan to the people it covers. That is the advantage over per-user percentages: one change to the plan reaches everybody on it.
- 6
Activate it for the right period
Activate a plan against a closed period, not a live one — a plan switched on blind shows its mistake on payday. Run it over a period you already know the numbers for and check the result before anyone is depending on it.
- 7
Pay it out
Paying commissions is its own flow, and the plan feeds it. The commission payment history is where you check what was paid, to whom, for which period.
Pro tip
- Test the plan against last month before you use it for this month. A commission plan is the one setting where an error arrives as a conversation about somebody's pay.
- Write down what the plan is meant to reward. A plan nobody can explain is a plan that changes behaviour in ways you did not intend.
