How to read your dashboard

The screen you open every morning, and which card is actually asking you for something.

4 min läst

The dashboard is not a report. It is the shop's front page: what is happening today, what is waiting, and what needs a decision before you get busy. Most of it is information; a few cards are tasks.

  1. 1

    Start with the register card

If your shop handles cash, this is the first thing you touch. A closed session shows Open register. It also warns you if yesterday's register was left open — deal with that before selling anything, because today's cash otherwise lands in yesterday's session.

  2. 2

    Read today against yesterday

The sales figures come with a comparison to yesterday. The comparison is the useful part: a number on its own tells you nothing about whether it is a good day.

  3. 3

Look for what is waiting on somebody

The cards that represent work — repairs waiting, tickets aging, low stock, leads that need attention — are the ones to act on. Everything else on the dashboard is context.

  4. 4

Use it as a jumping-off point

Cards link into the screen behind them. Reading a low-stock figure and then hunting for Inventory in the menu is doing it the long way.

  5. 5

    Know what it is not

The dashboard is today-shaped. For anything that involves a period — margins, taxes, profit and loss, staff performance — go to Reports. The dashboard is deliberately not the place to make a monthly decision.

  6. 6

    Take the tour of it

There is a guided walkthrough of this screen specifically. It is worth the three minutes, because the dashboard is the screen you will look at more than any other.

Proffs tips

  • What each person sees depends on their role. A cashier's dashboard is not the owner's, and that is deliberate — if somebody says a card is missing, check their permissions before assuming a bug.
  • If a dashboard figure disagrees with a report, trust the report. The report is period-bounded and explicit; the dashboard is a summary.
