Somebody went home without closing the drawer. Lunix notices and warns you, and the warning is not cosmetic: until that session is closed, everything you take today lands in yesterday's session and neither day reconciles.
- 1
Read the warning on the dashboard
The register card tells you yesterday's register is still open and asks you to close it before you keep selling. That is the whole problem stated plainly — today's cash is going into yesterday's numbers.
- 2
Close it before the first sale
Do this before you ring anything. Every minute you trade with yesterday's session open is another transaction filed under the wrong day, and each one has to be untangled by hand later.
- 3
Count what is physically there
Close the session and count the drawer by denomination as normal. What you count is what is in the drawer right now — which includes anything taken this morning before you noticed.
- 4
Expect a variance, and record it honestly
A session left open overnight usually closes with a difference. Do not adjust the count to make it disappear. The variance with a note explaining it is worth more than a clean number nobody believes.
- 5
Open today's session
With yesterday closed, open a new session and declare your opening float. From here the day behaves normally.
- 6
Fix the habit, not just the session
This warning appearing regularly is a closing-routine problem. The end-of-day close is one screen and a count; a shop where it does not happen is a shop that cannot tell you whether it lost money.
Pro tip
- If takings were already rung into yesterday's session before you noticed, say so in the closing note. The reason a figure is odd is more useful than the figure being tidy.
- Naming your register stations makes this much easier to unpick, because the session reads as a station and a number rather than just "the register".
